According to a video posted by the Brigada Facebook page, 11-year old Julito Nervar is a grade-schooler living in the mountains. He lives in Barangay Wawa, Rodriguez, Rizal – a two-hour drive from the busy city of Manila. Long before the sun rises, the hard-working Julito wakes up to harvest bananas from a little plantation. Afterwards, he sells them just before he goes to school.

He treks up to the mountains for an hour and climbs up banana trees to harvest the fruits. After that, he climbs down for another hour and crosses 7 rivers to get to a little marketplace called Wawa. During these journeys, the kid carries 30 kilograms of bananas on his back.

The mighty Julito Nervar earns Php200 – Php300 which he gives most to his parents and keeps some so he can buy school allowance and snacks.

The root of this need for children to help their families all stem from the country’s number one problem: poverty. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, around 2.7 million kids work to help meet the needs of their families, most of them aged 5 – 17 years old. Global organizations partner together to eradicate child labor. Naturally, it is dangerous for children to work in such hazardous environments.

Those who wish to donate to mighty Julito’s cause may do so by giving to Julito Z. Nerval’s Bando de Oro account with the account number 004690192262.
