Many people love to go biking — simply for enjoyment and relieving stress due to a busy lifestyle. However, biking is not only an enjoyable physical activity. Rather, it is also an effective way to raise awareness about a related cause. Take it from Attorney JP Cuñada who aims to cycle around the country not just for fitness purposes but also to raise awareness about the disease called Dystonia.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, he said:
“I’m doing this to help everyone of us kasi ‘pag na-supply natin ‘yong data na kailangan ng scientists natin, ‘yong blood and brain donation it will help all of us.”

Based on the report, Atty. Cuñada is apparently a Dystonia patient. Dystonia or “neurological movement disorder syndrome” is a rare disease that is highly hereditary, and usually, its common symptom includes repetitive muscle contractions, which results in twisting of the head, repetitive movements, and abnormal fixed postures.
“Nagti-twist ‘yong head ko…lagi sobrang sakit…hindi [ako] makakain, hindi [ako] makabasa.”

According to Atty. Cuñada, his brother lost his life last 2014 due to Dystonia. Although he couldn’t help but feel hopeless, he tried to remain steadfast in life. Good thing his cousin helped him when he underwent an operation – thus giving him a newfound confidence. Specialists placed a battery inside his chest — connected to his brain.

For now, there is still no cure for Dystonia. That is why Atty. Cuñada wants to educate and raise awareness to others regarding the rare disease through cycling.
He aims to reach Kalibo, Aklan on July 17, in celebration of his first year since his successful operation.
