Following the recent win of Angela Ponce as this year’s Miss Universe Spain, issues concerning her identity as a transgender woman became a major talk of the town especially among beauty pageant enthusiasts.
In an interview with PEP, Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 Teresita Ssen “Winwyn” Marquez gave her opinion regarding the issue. She clarified that she has nothing against transgender women joining pageants. As a matter of fact, she highly admires them.
“I love that Spain was really open na pinayagan talaga nila yung ganun. I have nothing against transgenders. I’m really proud na sobrang happy, out na talaga, and everyone is respecting them, di ba?”

Moreover, the actress-turned-beauty-queen pointed out that there is Miss International Queen, which is also a prestigious pageant exclusively for transgender women.
“I think, parang let’s just give it [Miss Universe] for natural-born women, and for transgenders to have their own prestigious pageant.”
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old Pinay beauty queen said that if ever the Miss Universe Organization would allow it to happen, then we can’t do anything but to accept it also.
“It boils down to what will Miss Universe Organization do. If they accept, then we all have to accept it. Wala naman tayong power para sabihin sa Miss Universe kung ano ang gagawin, kung anong bawal at hindi.“
As of now, the Miss Universe Organization has yet to give an official statement whether they will allow Angela Ponce to join this year’s Miss Universe pageant.
