Hard work is one of the virtues that runs through almost every Filipino’s blood. We are known to have perseverance, patience, and passion in our daily work to surpass each day. Constantino Velasquez Jr., a 69-year old senior citizen has been working for over three decades in a coconut dill farm in Lupon, Davao Oriental. This elderly gentleman is also blind but he doesn’t allow his handicap to hinder his work.
The Davao Oriental native shared during his early age, he can peel around 1,500 coconut dills per day. Meanwhile now, he can only finish at least 1,000 dills per day, which is still an impressive effort for his age.

He lost his vision when he was three years old after having a disease of measles. He had never damaged himself on sharp objects, because of his sharper instincts and attentiveness for over 30 years of working.
During his parents passed, Constantino and his siblings went on to different paths. He stayed at their home in spite of his difficult situation and continued to bring out the best in life. The old man is already contented of having enough food to fill his stomach daily.
Other than his earnings of peeling dills, he also receives financial support of 1,500 pesos each 3 months from the Senior Citizen’s Office.

Constantino comforts himself to fine music and guitar during his spare time.
He will now turn 70 this December, and his only wish is to have eyesight again and see the world’s beauty. If not made possible, he still finds happiness and contentment because God has been his vision for an entire life. Constantino’s life serves as an inspiration to other handicapped Filipinos who takes a leap beneath impediments.
